Although he appeared in over 200 films in his career, he will always be remembered as Micah Torrance the easy going sheriff on "The Rifleman" TV series of the 1950s & 60s. His was a memorable face and at 6' tall, with a craggy, but handsome, face and a scruff of brown hair he looked the part of a westerner even though he was born on the east coast. He was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York on March 13, 1901 and grew up in upstate New York. He began his acting career in local stock theatre companies in New York and repertory companies. He left for Hollywood in the 1920s and began a long career in films. His versatility led to his casting in many various roles. He became a friend of John Wayne's and a part of 'The Duke's' repertoire company appearing in many of Wayne's films. He appeared in TV movies including: "The House on Greenapple Road" (1970); "Set This Town on Fire" (1973) and "Guilty or Innocent: The Sam Sheppard Murder Case" (1973). He guested on numerous TV series including: "The Lone Ranger"; "Lassie"; "The Fugitive"; "Perry Mason"; "Gunsmoke"; "Star Trek"; "Rawhide"; "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea"; "Family Affair"; "The Wild, Wild West"; "The Waltons" and "The Rockford Files." He died of natural causes on October 14, 1983 in Los Angeles, California at age 82.
