The son of Harry Carey Sr. and Olive Golden Carey, he looked very different from his father with golden-reddish colored hair and boyishly handsome good looks. He was equally at home in westerns or contemporary dramas and became a staple of both John Ford and John Wayne's repertory companies appearing in many films of both men. He was born on May 16, 1921 in Saugus, California and grew up in a very 'film oriented' family on his father's ranch where he became an accomplished horseman. He served in the Navy during World War II and later returned hoping to go into the cattle business with his father but he had sold the ranch. He was persuaded to try film acting by a friend of his father's thus beginning a successful career. His film debut was in "Pursued" (1947) as Prentice McComber. Among his other impressive film credits are: "Red River" (1948) with John Wayne and his father, as Dan Latimer; "3 Godfathers" (1948) as William Kearney, The Abilene Kid; "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949) as Lt. Pennell, pictured above; "Rio Grande" (1950) as Trooper Sandy Boone; "The Wild Blue Yonder" (1951) as Sgt. Shaker Schuker; "Warpath" (1951) as Capt. Gregson; "Monkey Business" (1952) with Cary Grant & Marilyn Monroe, as a Reporter; "San Antone" (1953) as Dobe; "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) as Winslow; "Island in the Sky" (1953) as Hunt; "The Long Gray Line" (1955) as Dwight Eisenhower; "Mister Roberts" (1955) as Stefanowski; "The Searchers" (1956) as Ben Jorgensen; "Rio Bravo" (1959) as Harold; "Shenandoah" (1965) as Jenkins; "Dirty Dingus Magee" (1970) as Stuart; "The Long Riders" (1980) as George Arthur; "Gremlins" (1984) as Mr. Anderson; "The Whales of August" (1987) as Joshua Brackett; "Tombstone" (1993) as Marshal Fred White and "The Sunchaser" (1996) as Cashier. On TV he was a regular on: the "Spin and Marty" series (1955-58); "Texas John Slaughter" (1958) as Ben Jenkins and "Black Beauty" (1978) mini-series as Mr. Bond. He starred in TV movies including: "Kate Bliss and the Ticker Tape Kid" (1978); "Wild Times" (1980); "The Shadow Riders" (1982) and "Last Stand at Saber River" (1997). He has also guested on such TV series as: "Wagon Train"; "Gunsmoke"; "Rawhide"; "Laramie"; "Perry Mason"; "Banacek"; "Little House on the Prairie" and Knight Rider."
