She was so good at her craft that she could really get on your nerves. A smallish, gray-blonde haired lady with expressive eyes, a smirky smile and a whiny but sharp monotone voice, she was most often cast as the meddling mother or mother-in-law. Born July 24, 1901 in Lynn, Massachusetts, she was the older sister of actor Jack Albertson. Her early days in show business are quite sketchy but she was one of the first female writers for stage and radio so she likely worked in those mediums for a time. She made her film debut in "Mutiny on the Black Hawk" in 1939, as the Widow, and did not return to films until 1953. She was a supporting actor on the radio series "The Phil Baker Show" in the early 1930s. Among her other film credits are: "So This is Love" (1953) as Mary Garden; "About Mrs. Leslie" (1954) as Mrs. Sims; "Ma & Pa Kettle at Waikiki" (1955) as Mrs. Andrews; "Forever Darling" (1956) with Lucille Ball, as Society Reporter; "The Long, Hot Summer" (1958) as Mrs. Stewart; "The Gazebo" (1959) as Mrs. Chandler; "Don't Give Up the Ship" (1959) as Mrs. Trabert; "All the Fine Young Cannibals" (1960) as Mrs. McDowall; "Period of Adjustment" (1962) as Mrs. Alice McGill; "Barefoot in the Park" (1967) as Aunt Harriet and "What's Up Doc" (1972) with Barbra Streisand, as Mrs. Van Hoskins, her last film. On TV she was busy with regular roles on: "That's My Boy" (1955-55) with Eddie Mayehoff, as Henrietta Patterson; "Those Whiting Girls" (1955) as Mrs. Whiting; "The Tom Ewell Show" (1960-61) as Irene Brady; "Bewitched" (1964-72) as Darrin's mother Mrs. Phyllis Stephens and "That Girl" (1966-71) as Donald's mother Mrs. Hollinger. She guest starred on many TV series including: "Perry Mason"; "Gunsmoke"; "The Munsters"; "The Wild, Wild West"; "Time Tunnel" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." She also appeared in the made for TV movie "The House That Would Not Die" (1970). She died of Alzheimer's disease on September 28, 1982 in Santa Monica, California at age 81.
